Miyagi Prefecture sits on the Pacific coast of the Tohoku region, roughly two hours north of Tokyo by Shinkansen. Its capital, Sendai, is the largest city in northern Honshu and serves as both a cultural hub and a gateway to the surrounding natural splendors. Known as the "City of Trees," Sendai is famous for its broad, zelkova-lined avenues that burst into greenery each spring and glow with lanterns during summer festivals.
Miyagi's coastline was shaped over centuries into one of Japan's most celebrated scenic views — Matsushima, where some 260 pine-covered islands rise from a sheltered bay. The great haiku poet Matsuo Basho visited in 1689 and was reportedly so awestruck he could barely write. Today visitors arrive by sightseeing boat, strolling among shrine-topped islets and tasting locally farmed oysters plucked fresh from the bay's waters.
Every August, Sendai hosts the magnificent Tanabata Matsuri — one of Japan's three great summer festivals. Millions of colorful paper streamers and ornaments hang from bamboo poles throughout the city, creating a canopy of festive decoration. Year-round, Sendai is celebrated for gyutan (grilled beef tongue), a dish that originated here and remains a must-try for every visitor.

Widely ranked among Japan's three most beautiful views, Matsushima Bay is a shallow inlet scattered with 260 small pine-cloaked islands.
