About the Mallard
The mallard is one of the most familiar wild ducks, instantly recognizable by the drake's glossy dark green head, the bright yellow bill, and the crisp white ring around its neck. Floating calmly on ponds and rivers, mallards have a relaxed, easygoing presence that makes them a comforting sight.
Because they can be found on almost any pond, river, or park lake, mallards are a bird many people have fond, everyday memories of. That familiarity, combined with their handsome coloring, makes them a warm and approachable subject to color.
Benefits as a Coloring & Brain Training Activity
For coloring, building up the glossy sheen of the green head with layered shades, and adding gentle ripples to the water, is a calming and satisfying activity. Paying close attention to where the light catches the feathers is a nice way to engage the eye and the hand together.
