About Yukitsuri (Japanese Winter Tree-Roping)

Yukitsuri (literally 'snow suspending') is a centuries-old Japanese horticultural craft seen in snowy regions along the Sea of Japan, most famously at Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa. Before heavy, wet winter snows arrive in November, gardeners erect tall bamboo or timber poles beside prized pine trees and fan hundreds of straw ropes down to support every horizontal branch.

Both practical and breathtakingly poetic, these conical arrays of golden straw rope against dark evergreen needles and white snow are celebrated as one of Japan's signature winter sights.

Coloring Tips & Brain Training Benefits

Trace or shade the radiating ropes in warm ochre or straw yellow, keeping the sky behind them a soft slate blue or winter twilight gray so the cone lines read crisply. Deepen the pine boughs with moss and forest green while leaving snow caps clean white.
