About the Oni Mask

In Japanese folklore, the oni is a powerful ogre-like demon, usually pictured with wild hair, sharp fangs, and one or two horns growing from its head. Oni appear throughout Japanese stories and art as fearsome, sometimes even clumsy, figures blamed for misfortune and bad luck. Their most famous appearance today is at Setsubun, the early-February festival marking the turn of the seasons, when families and temples hold a bean-throwing ritual called mamemaki. One person wears an oni mask while everyone else tosses roasted soybeans at them, chanting "Oni wa soto, fuku wa uchi" — "Demons out, good fortune in" — to drive away bad luck and welcome a fresh start.

This mask gives you plenty of bold shapes to work with. Traditional oni are colored in strong, saturated tones — a fiery red, a deep blue, or even green are all authentic choices for the skin — while the horns and fangs are usually left gold or ivory so they stand out against it. Since the face fills most of the page, it helps to start there and work outward toward the hair and background. Shading the heavy eyebrows and the inside of the mouth a shade darker is what gives the mask its glare, and if the sheet includes finer details like wisps of hair or small patterns on the skin, filling those in slowly at the end makes for a satisfying, richly detailed finish.
