About the Spinning Top (Koma)
The spinning top, known in Japan as koma, is one of the country's oldest toys, with wooden tops recorded in use well over a thousand years ago. Traditionally carved from hard wood and set spinning with a length of string wound tightly around the body, a koma became especially linked to New Year celebrations, when children and adults alike gathered outdoors to spin them in friendly contests of skill and endurance. Part of its good-luck appeal comes from a simple play on words: the way a top 'goes around and around' (mawaru) echoes the hope that money and good fortune will likewise keep circulating smoothly through the year ahead. Local craftsmen developed their own signature styles over the centuries, from tall lacquered tops turned on a lathe to sturdy fighting tops once spun against each other in back-alley contests during the Edo period.
A traditional koma is painted with several narrow rings circling its widest point, a decoration that does double duty: at rest the bands show off the toy's craftsmanship, and once the top is spinning fast, the colors blur together into soft, glowing bands of light. That makes it a rewarding subject to color, since working outward ring by ring, choosing a fresh shade for each band, mirrors the way the pattern was designed to be seen in motion.
