Oshougatsu, the Japanese New Year, is the most significant holiday of the year. Temple bells ring 108 times at midnight to cleanse the 108 worldly desires described in Buddhist teaching. Families gather to eat osechi (traditional New Year foods), visit shrines for the year's first prayer (hatsumode), and welcome a fresh start together.
