About Okiraku
Coloring pages born from a mother's wish, and years of trial and error
It started with one small comment from my mother
"These coloring books are kind of boring," she said — almost in passing. That single sentence is where Okiraku began.
At the time, my mother was recovering from an illness, and I bought her coloring book after coloring book from bookstores, hoping it would help maintain her cognitive function and keep her fingers nimble. But she would fill in a few pages, lose interest, and set each one aside. Watching store-bought coloring books fail to satisfy her again and again, I picked up a digital pen myself and started drawing original designs made just for her.
Our Mission
To keep creating the kind of coloring pages my mother taught me that seniors truly want, and can enjoy from the heart — free, accessible, and made with real dignity — for elderly individuals and the people caring for them, worldwide.
Working with my toughest art director
Once I started drawing, I discovered just how many real, specific obstacles ordinary coloring pages create for seniors. My mother became an uncompromising art director, and she never held back:
- "The lines are too thin — I can't tell where I'm supposed to color. Make them clearer."
- "When there are too many colors to choose from, it just tires me out and my hand stops."
- "Designs made for small children hurt my pride. I want something dignified, made for an adult."
- "I want pictures my grandchildren would see and say 'Wow, beautiful!' — something we can enjoy together."
Taking her feedback to heart, I adjusted line weight down to fractions of a millimeter, searching for a balance between clarity and elegance. I also made sure every single page came with a finished color sample, so no one would have to stop and wonder which color to use next. Through countless back-and-forths between mother and son, the style that is now uniquely Okiraku's own began to take shape.
Passing these pages on to you
The enormous collection of designs my mother and I worked through together — sometimes struggling, sometimes laughing — is, to me, an irreplaceable record of the time we spent together, and proof of a bond that hasn't faded. If these pages, filled with all of that, can bring even a little more warmth and color into the daily lives of people in care or recovery, and the families supporting them, nothing would make me happier.
Our Activities
We provide a vast library of free, A4-printable coloring pages ranging from seasonal Japanese flora to complex "Mystery Puzzles." These resources are widely used in nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, and by families at home to enhance daily care routines.
What Makes Okiraku Different
Our coloring pages stand out from commercially available alternatives in several key ways:
- Clear, visible lines: Line thickness and contrast are specifically optimized for older adults
- Dignified adult designs: Never childish — each design respects the user's maturity
- Color samples included: Every page is paired with a completed color reference
- A4 print-ready: Easy to print from any home or office printer
- Completely free, no registration required: Maximum accessibility for everyone
Health and Brain Training Benefits of Coloring
Research increasingly supports coloring as an effective activity for cognitive maintenance, dementia prevention, and relaxation. The act of moving your fingers, making color decisions, and experiencing the satisfaction of a finished piece simultaneously activates multiple brain regions including the prefrontal cortex, parietal lobe, and visual cortex.
For seniors specifically, regular coloring activity is associated with:
- Maintaining and improving fine motor skills and finger dexterity
- Concentration and attention training
- Stimulating creativity and color perception
- Building a sense of achievement and self-confidence
- Reminiscence therapy — familiar subjects help bring back positive memories
- Social engagement — group coloring fosters conversation and connection

A Note on the Name
The word "Okiraku" (おきらく) carries a simple wish: that as we grow older, we might carry that time lightly — at ease, and comfortable in our own skin, rather than with worry.
Okiraku is run by one person, as an independent, personal project. I intend to keep publishing, one page at a time, the kind of coloring pages my mother taught me that seniors truly want — the kind they can enjoy with their whole heart.
