A mikoshi is an ornately decorated portable shrine believed to house a Shinto deity during festival processions. Teams of bearers hoist the heavy, gilded structure onto their shoulders and carry it through the streets with rhythmic chants and swaying movements, symbolically bringing the deity's blessing to every corner of the neighborhood.
