About the Northern Cardinal
With its unmistakable pointed crest, jet-black face mask, and radiant crimson feathers, the Northern Cardinal is one of the most admired songbirds of winter. Unlike many migratory birds, cardinals remain active year-round, bringing a flash of brilliant warmth to snow-covered branches and quiet garden feeders.
Both male and female cardinals sing clear, whistling melodies even on crisp winter mornings. While the male wears bright scarlet from crest to tail, the female displays elegant warm buff-brown feathers tinged with rose-red on her crest, wings, and tail.
Coloring Tips & Brain Training Benefits
Combine two or three reds—such as vermilion, scarlet, and deep carmine—so the wing feathers stand out clearly from the breast. Keep the small facial mask around the beak crisp charcoal-black, and use soft sky blue or cool gray to shade snowy branches.
