Tanabata, the Star Festival, celebrates the legend of two star-crossed lovers, Orihime and Hikoboshi, who are permitted to meet only once a year across the Milky Way. Across Japan, people write wishes on colorful strips of paper called tanzaku and hang them on bamboo branches, filling streets and shrines with fluttering color every July.
