About the Shih Tzu

The name Shih Tzu comes from the Chinese words for "lion dog," a nod to the breed's resemblance to the carved stone lions that guard the entrances of Chinese temples and palaces. The breed itself traces back further still, to small palace dogs bred in Tibet and refined over centuries within the Chinese imperial court, where Buddhist monks are said to have presented them as gifts to the emperor. For generations these little dogs lived a pampered life among royalty, sometimes carried in the wide sleeves of court robes, and were considered far too precious to be bought or sold. Today the Shih Tzu is loved worldwide not for any working skill but simply for its warm, cheerful companionship, a trait that has made it a favorite family pet for more than a century.
