About the Pomeranian

The Pomeranian takes its name from Pomerania, a region on the Baltic coast now split between Germany and Poland, where its much larger ancestors worked as sturdy sled and herding dogs in the Spitz family. Over generations the breed was bred down in size, and the real turning point came in the late 1800s, when Britain's Queen Victoria brought home a small Pomeranian from a trip to Italy, fell for it, and went on to breed and show even smaller ones herself. Within a few decades the breed's average weight had roughly halved, and the tiny, fluffy companion dog familiar today became a fashionable pet first among royalty and high society, then everywhere else.
