About the Miniature Schnauzer

The Miniature Schnauzer traces its roots to 19th-century Germany, where farmers in the regions of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg bred down the larger Standard Schnauzer, mixing in smaller terrier-type dogs, to create a compact, tireless ratter suited to barns and stables. Its name comes from the German word "Schnauze," meaning snout or muzzle, a nod to the breed's most memorable feature: a thick, wiry beard and bushy eyebrows that frame an unusually expressive face. Recognized as its own breed in the early 20th century and brought to the United States by the 1920s, the Miniature Schnauzer quickly won fans well beyond the farm for its sturdy, no-nonsense charm and has remained one of the world's most popular small companion dogs ever since.

That signature beard and those heavy eyebrows are the heart of this page, and leaving them white or only very lightly shaded is what gives the finished drawing its alert, dignified look.
