About the Welsh Corgi

The Welsh Corgi takes its name from the Welsh words for "dwarf dog," a fitting title for a breed built low to the ground on famously short legs. Corgis were bred in Wales centuries ago as cattle herders, and their small stature was actually an advantage: a low dog could dart in, nip at a cow's heels, and duck away before a kick landed, driving the herd along without ever being in real danger. That working history is also why the breed carries itself with such confidence and alertness despite its comical proportions. In more recent times the Corgi became famous well beyond the farm as the breed most closely associated with Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, who kept and bred them for over seventy years, a connection that turned the once-humble herding dog into one of the most recognized and beloved breeds in the world.
