About the Kaninchen Dachshund

The dachshund was developed in Germany centuries ago to hunt badgers underground — its very name means "badger dog" in German, and its long body and short, powerful legs let it follow prey straight into a burrow. Breeders later worked toward an even smaller size built for chasing rabbits, giving rise to the Kaninchen Dachshund ("Kaninchen" is German for "rabbit"), the smallest of the breed's three official size classes alongside the standard and miniature dachshund. In Japan, dachshunds of this small size became something of a national favorite, topping popularity rankings among pet dogs for much of the 2000s, and its long silhouette and endlessly curious expression remain among the most fondly recognized in the country, familiar to people of every generation.
