About Jurojin
Jurojin is one of Japan's Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin), a cheerful group of deities who are said to travel together on a treasure ship, each bringing a different kind of blessing — wealth, wisdom, happiness, or, in Jurojin's case, a long and healthy life. His roots trace back to Chinese Taoist belief in a star deity linked to the Southern Pole Star, thought to watch over how long a person lives; that figure was brought into Japanese folk religion and reimagined as a kindly old sage. He is almost always shown as an elderly man with a very long white beard and a tall wooden staff, and tied to that staff is a scroll said to record the lifespan of every living creature. A deer nearly always walks beside him, since in East Asian tradition the deer, like the crane and the tortoise, is a symbol of long life — some old tales even say Jurojin's deer is itself many hundreds of years old.
