About Fukurokuju

Fukurokuju is one of Japan's Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin), a group of folk deities each believed to bring a different kind of good fortune. His roots trace back to Chinese Taoist tradition, where he was linked to the Southern Pole Star, a star long associated with a long life. His name itself is built from three Japanese characters — fuku (happiness), roku (wealth and status), and ju (longevity) — so a single figure is understood to carry all three blessings at once, which is part of why he remains one of the most beloved of the seven gods today.

Fukurokuju is instantly recognizable by his unusually tall, domed forehead, said to hold the wisdom gathered over an extremely long life, paired with a long flowing white beard and a short, stooped body leaning on a wooden staff. That staff often carries a scroll said to record the lifespan of every living creature, and he is frequently pictured together with a crane or a turtle, two animals long treated as symbols of long life in East Asian art.
