About Daikokuten

Daikokuten is one of Japan's Seven Lucky Gods (Shichifukujin), a beloved group of deities said to sail into port together every New Year aboard a treasure ship, bringing good fortune for the year ahead. His story reaches back even further: he began as Mahakala, a fierce guardian form of the Hindu god Shiva, who arrived in Japan long ago alongside Buddhist teachings. Over time he blended with Okuninushi, an old Shinto god of the land and harvest, and mellowed from a warrior spirit into the round, good-humored figure people picture today. That kind of blending — a foreign god welcomed in and given a gentler, homegrown face — is a very Japanese way of doing things, and Daikokuten remains one of the most recognized lucky figures in the country, often kept smiling in kitchens and shops for good measure.
