About Toyama
Toyama Prefecture sits on the Japan Sea coast between the Noto Peninsula and the Northern Alps, one of Japan's most compact yet geographically dramatic regions. Within a single prefecture, visitors can move from sea level beaches famed for glowing firefly squid to 3,000-metre alpine peaks via one of the world's most spectacular mountain transit routes — all in a single day.
The Toyama Bay is extraordinary in its own right: its steep underwater topography plunges to over 1,000 metres just offshore, drawing cold, nutrient-rich currents that nourish an exceptional diversity of seafood. Toyama is the only place in Japan where firefly squid (hotaruika) rise to the surface in massive bioluminescent swarms from March to May, turning the dark water into a shimmering blue light show that has amazed fishermen and visitors for centuries.
Toyama's pharmaceutical heritage is also unique — for over 300 years, travelling medicine merchants (okusuri) from Toyama distributed herbal remedies across Japan on a pay-later trust system, building a reputation for quality and integrity that shapes the prefecture's character to this day. Gokayama, in the deep Shogawa river gorge, shares UNESCO World Heritage status with neighbouring Shirakawa-go as one of Japan's finest preserved thatched-farmhouse villages.
Featured Spot: Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route
The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is a 37-kilometre traverse across the Northern Japan Alps using a combination of cable cars, ropeways, trolley buses, and walking paths that reaches 2,450 metres at its highest point. The route opens in mid-April when snowplows have carved corridors through walls of snow reaching 20 metres high — the famous "Snow Corridor" (Yuki no Otani) is one of Japan's most astonishing seasonal spectacles. In summer, the alpine meadows bloom with wildflowers, and the views across the Tateyama range to Mt. Fuji on clear days are incomparable.

Best Seasons to Visit
Spring (mid-April to early June) is peak season — the Snow Corridor opens on the Alpine Route in mid-April, and firefly squid season peaks in May. Summer (July–August) offers alpine hiking on Mt. Tateyama and Mt. Tsurugi, with wildflower meadows at their finest. Autumn brings spectacular foliage to Gokayama and the Shogawa gorge. Winter is magical at Gokayama under deep snow, though the Alpine Route is closed from November to mid-April.
