The Night Watch
Rembrandt painted this huge group portrait of an Amsterdam civic guard company in 1642. The captain in black with a red sash and his lieutenant in gold step forward from the shadows, surrounded by guardsmen, a drummer, and a small dog.
Keep the background dark with browns and black, and leave the captain, the lieutenant, and the glowing girl on the left bright, like a spotlight on a stage. The guardsman in red on the left also stands out nicely.
The painting's popular name is said to come from old, darkened varnish that made the scene look like night, although it is thought to take place in daylight.
