The Great Wave off Kanagawa
This is Katsushika Hokusai's most famous woodblock print, from his series Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji (around 1831). A giant wave curls like a claw over three fishing boats, while snow-capped Mount Fuji sits small and calm in the distance.
Shade the waves from deep indigo to pale blue, and leave the dots of spray as white paper—this gives the print its bold, crisp look. Color the sky a soft cream, shading to gray behind the waves, and keep the top of Mount Fuji white.
Japanese woodblock prints like this one fascinated European painters in the late 19th century, including Monet and Van Gogh. The small panel in the upper left gives the title in Japanese, and Hokusai's signature is written just beside it.
