About Stag Beetle
The stag beetle is one of Japan's most beloved summer insects, admired for its powerful mandibles that resemble the antlers of a deer (or stag). In Japan, these impressive beetles are often found on oak and chestnut trees during summer nights, feeding on tree sap. Japanese warriors of the feudal era were so impressed by the stag beetle's fierce appearance that they modeled samurai helmet ornaments after them.
For many Japanese, the memory of searching for stag beetles with a flashlight on warm summer nights is a cherished childhood experience. There are several species found in Japan, including the popular Miyama stag beetle and the highly sought-after Ōkuwagata (giant stag beetle), which can fetch high prices among collectors.
